Panel 2: A Data Economy
City Communication and Data Systems. Growing Impacts of Information. Information from social media, crowdsourcing and sharing economy companies will have a greater impact on cities. Cities are grappling with how to ingest this data into systems and put it to use. Not only is this data unstructured in the form of text, video, images and audio, but it also comes from a variety of sources that exist independent of government. This presents a challenge since data from these sources can be highly relevant and useful for improving government services. On the other side, how can the city leverage the value of data it already owns and how to re-aggregate and broker some of those innovative services to offer insights to commuters for journey planning?

Panel 3: IoT
The Internet of Things (IoT) is offering opportunities for cities to become more efficient by leveraging constant connectivity and sensors from a diversity of devices. Cities today are piloting a variety of technologies, but lack comprehensive strategies to leverage intelligent end-devices. To-date cities have been slow to adopt these solutions, as utilities and telecommunications providers have taken the lead. Coordination is required to prevent these stakeholders from investing in both redundant communications systems and devices. During this panel, we will discuss how utilities and cities are achieving early project wins to create buy-in for larger IoT programs.

Adding Value with Eco-System Modeling to Ecosystem Development and Formation of PPPs
A successful infrastructure strategy requires a strong alignment among the utility providing services around infrastructure and the participants consuming these services for value creation in this energy ‘ecosystem’. To avoid trial and error in achieving this alignment, a new approach to modeling and planning the interaction of the participants within the energy ecosystem, including the utility, is presented. This approach uses energy as the common value flow amongst ecosystem entities, maps other value flows to the relationships between entities, and enables mutually beneficial relationships, thereby increasing value generation within the community energy ecosystem.

The Mobility Revolution – How EVs will Change the Energy Landscape
“McKinsey Energy Insights’ latest analysis shows how electric trucks (eTrucks) could capture a significant share of sales as early as 2030 and assesses the impact this would have on energy markets. The new research is based on adoption curve scenario modelling of 27 truck segments in US, China, and Europe, incorporating the trends of three main drivers for electrification.”

The Electric Vehicle, A Game Changer for the Energy Industry
With the electrical vehicle, the car maker is exploring new territories. Beyond the mobility, the EV will provide services to the grid. The grid operator will be able to use the EV battery as an additional affordable tool and the Driver will benefit from this service through TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) reduction. The challenge for both sectors is to trust each other to create a win-win operation. Some roadblocks need to be addressed such as local regulation, cost of new components, revenue stream organisation, but the willingness of Renault and its partners is to succeed in the near future.

Utility & City Hubs of Tomorrow
Both, utilities and cities face competition in a growing extent and mayor challenges like climate change, “Energiewende”, urbanization or rising prices for social welfare.
They have to adopt their strategies and actions in order to fulfil the needs of their customers and their inhabitants. A new framework and a new culture is needed.
Is it the will to cooperate, to open the (past) secrets of business successes for partners fearlessly? Yes! ...referring to the success of the Joint Venture “ASCR” between Siemens und Wiener Stadtwerke.
Cooperation is the key!
