Refat Atef Ghunem
Research Officer Measurement Science & Standards
Dr. Ghunem is a Research Officer with the Measurement Science and Standards Portfolio, National Research Council Canada. He leads the high voltage insulation research in the electrical power measurements group at the Measurements Science and Standards Portfolio. He leads R&D projects in collaboration with the industry on testing and diagnostics of high voltage power distribution cables. Refat holds an Adjunct Professor position in the École de technologie supérieure, Montreal, Quebec. Dr. Ghunem received BSc and MSc degrees from the American University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (UAE), in 2008 and 2010, respectively, and the PhD degree from the University of Waterloo, Ontario in 2014. From 2008 until 2010 he worked as a (developee) substation engineer in the maintenance division at the Abu Dhabi Transmission and Despatch Company (Electricity Transmission Utility), Al Ain, UAE. Dr. Ghunem is the chair of the Outdoor Insulation Technical Committee of the IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (IEEE-DEIS). He also served as a member of IEEE-DEIS working on the Inclined Plane Tracking and Erosion Test for DC insulators. He is a member of the D 1.62 group of the Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE) working on “Surface Degradation of Polymeric Insulating Materials for Outdoor Applications.” Dr. Ghunem is also the chair of the IEEE Joint Ottawa-Montreal DEIS Chapter.
