Mercè Griera i Fisa
Head of Research and Innovation Sector
Mercè Griera i Fisa is a Scientific Officer and Head of Sector Research and Innovation in the Smart Cities and Sustainability Unit of the Communication Networks, Content and Technology Directorate General (DG CONNECT) at the European Commission, where she is responsible for research and innovation activities. She entered the European Commission on 1993 in the area of Research Networking where she supported the first World-Wide Web projects. In 1999, she was appointed Area Co-ordinator for Distributed Systems where she promoted the convergence between IT and Telecommunications and provided support for the first GRID computing projects. In 2003, she was appointed Head of Sector on Embedded Systems where she promoted the creation of the technology platform ARTEMIS. Prior to joining the European Commission, she was Technical Director of CAETI (Generalitat de Catalunya) and Head of Project at CIEJ (Caixa d´Estalvis i Pensions de Barcelona). From 1983 to 1987, she was a Lecturer and Researcher at the Autonomous University of Barcelona with research positions at the University of Toulon and of the Var (FR) and at the University of Sherbrooke (CA). She holds a degree on Computer Sciences and a Masters degree on Mathematics.
