Large scale roll-out and usage of a sensor network at Enexis

Getting state of the art networks means an investment in digitalisation of the grid. Enexis started the digitalisation with distribution automation (DA)in 2011 and followed with the roll-out of the smart meter in the years after. In 2017 a roll-out  of Da-light is started together with the development of an IT architecture and a data science community. Digitalisation helps with the challenges we face due to the energy transition and the more complex energy system we face. The data that is generated is already used in several use cases as will internally as externally and is generating value from the moment that the first components where live.

Business Driven Grid Analytics Capability Deployment

Utility analytics has exploded in the last few years primarily driven by the hype around big data, data science and advanced analytics technologies, and is now seen as a strategic lever to improve assets, operations and customer satisfaction. Despite this drive many utilities are still struggling to implement analytics, either not knowing where to start, not knowing how to scale from pilot developments or attempting technology/vendor driven approaches. This presentation makes the argument for a business led and driven analytics capability deployment approach, enabled by advanced technologies and data science, based on experience from successful projects in the US and Sweden.

How DSO can Support Demand Response as part of the Flexible Energy Markets

Energy production has shifted heavily from centralised to decentralised. As part of the energy transition, most of the disruption will happen in distribution network and DSOs has to change the way they manage the distribution network. In the traditional world the electricity was delivered through a passive network but when the electricity is generated more locally, it challenges DSOs and other market participants to develop dynamic network management tools including both market products and technical solutions. The key is to collaborate and find the ways to activate customers to balance the weather-related production when required. This challenges the energy sector to put customers in focus and solve the challenge without affecting too much for daily living. One solution is to utilise smart meters as part of the demand response, which could be used to open the demand response market and attract customers be active players also in the energy market.

Building Energy Communities, the Real Promise of Distributed Energy

The presentation will offer deeper understanding of decentralization, its deep connection to digital, the value it is creating, and how it will be enabled or blocked by a number of business, technological and regulatory evolution in years to come. In this presentation, we will try to shed light on some of the above by answering one simple question: is there actual value in optimizing locally, ie in energy communities, from the point of view of the global power system and from that of the end-user ? We will present results obtained from modelling the future (2030) power system,  which provide us with a clear positive answer – given some enabling conditions. We will then discuss the path to that future grid vision, and discuss some ideas on how to start enabling the true value of decentralization in 2017.

CrowdNett: the First Dutch Virtual Power Plant of Aggregated Home Batteries

Eneco introduced in 2016 as one of the first European reseller the Tesla Powerwall. But already started to develop services based on this, and other home batteries. In 2016 we introduced ‘CrowdNett’, a sharing concept. We use partly the capacity of the home batteries and use it, aggregated, for ancillary services (PCR for TSO). As a result we can offer the customer a discount on their installation and a yearly gratification which makes the CrowdNett formule a very compelling offer. In the integration, we work closely together with development teams of Tesla, SolarEdge and Ampard. CrowdNett is now starting to enter other region’s like Germany with utility partner LichtBlick.

In the presentation we focus on the integration, the balancing market, the customer concept and future developments.

Enabling the ability to respond to context in real-time, fuelled by a diversity of data

With the ever growing data intensity and data diversity, the Smart Grid requires a rethink of the structure and operational suppleness of its infrastructure and its systems. Instead of collecting data to make long-range plans looking backward. Create a system that is active, dynamic, and secure, with the ability to intelligently react to the distributed resources of micro-grids and two-way power flows using context in real time. We don’t need more data but the right data at the right time.

Generating highly accurate solar installed capacity & location data using satellite imagery

Accurate data on the installed capacity and location of distributed energy is essential for utility companies to operate and innovate in the changing energy landscape. But data that meets ideal requirements for accuracy and granularity is often difficult to accumulate or inaccessible due to the drawbacks in incumbent data collection methods. Sobolt found the answer to the drawbacks in current data collection methods through the technological revolutions in satellite imagery and artificial intelligence. Using high-resolution satellite imagery and a unique imagery analysis framework that combines spectral imaging, machine learning algorithms and statistical methods, Sobolt developed a scalable solution to provide accurate data on the location and capacity of existing solar PV installations.

The consumer as key resource to bridge the gap between renewables and system stability

Customers are shaping the energy system of the future by transforming into prosumers through the increase of the number of decentralized energy resources. These customers have a new focus and different needs. They impact the grid stability and our future energy supply that should be intelligently managed to integrate them efficiently in to the energy system. To allow this, utilities and device manufacturers have to meet new types of customer needs, finance the development and continuous management: new business models have to be created where all stakeholders can benefit.

Experiences of certification processes to ensure integration of Smart Grids

The new technologies used in the Smart Grids combine the electrical requirements, communication specifications and Big Data analysis. To ensure the correct operation of the system is not enough to add the partial certifications of each of the elements that make up the system. The experiences with leading utilities demonstrate that the certification process must cover the legal requirements but also must ensure the interoperability of the equipment, the correct dimensioning of the communication channels and the correct management of the obtained data. These points were not necessary in the past but they are essential today.

InterFlex : European energy players join their forces to foster the energy transition

In a fast-paced and competitive world, modernization is a priority that requires Energy actors to explore new concepts. In particular, DSOs must find ways to optimize electric power systems while integrating increasing shares of renewables (more than 50% by 2030) in a stable and secure way.The InterFlex project, as a response to the Low Carbon Energy LCE-02-2016 call, investigates the interactions between flexibilities provided by energy market players and the distribution grid. Interflex has brought together 20 partners across the European Union (5 DSOs, equipment manufacturers, research institutes) to explore flexibility solutions such as Demand Response, cross energy services, energy storage and the overall smartening of the distribution grid.

RESERVE: enabling a transition to up to 100% RES

Introducing even higher levels of RES generation is challenging the stability of power networks.  New techniques are needed to regulate frequency and voltage in this context.  Both concept development, simulations with hardware in the loop and field trials are needed to validate the techniques as the basis for proposing new and modified network codes and ancillary service definitions.  These challenges are being addressed by the Horizon2020 project RESERVE and initial project results will be presented.
