H2020: EU Research and Innovation

The vision of the Energy Union put forward by the European Commission in February 2015 is of an integrated continent-wide energy system where strong, innovative and competitive companies can develop the industrial products and technology needed to deliver energy efficiency and low-carbon technologies. Citizens should be able to take ownership of the transition and participate actively in the market. Both the Energy Union and the Digital Single Market focus on tangible benefits for the consumer.

With the strong belief that innovation is an investment in our future, the European Commission is supporting via Horizon 2020 - the biggest EU Research and Innovation programme ever – breakthrough close to market projects in the area of Smart Grids and Energy Storage, which have the potential to contribute to a successful digitally supported energy transition. To complement individual project's work, the BRIDGE initiative offers a discussion forum to the currently running Horizon 2020 Smart Grid and Energy Storage projects, to create a structured view on cross-cutting issues which are encountered by the projects and might constitute obstacles to innovation.

InterFlex : European energy players join their forces to foster the energy transition

In a fast-paced and competitive world, modernization is a priority that requires Energy actors to explore new concepts. In particular, DSOs must find ways to optimize electric power systems while integrating increasing shares of renewables (more than 50% by 2030) in a stable and secure way.The InterFlex project, as a response to the Low Carbon Energy LCE-02-2016 call, investigates the interactions between flexibilities provided by energy market players and the distribution grid. Interflex has brought together 20 partners across the European Union (5 DSOs, equipment manufacturers, research institutes) to explore flexibility solutions such as Demand Response, cross energy services, energy storage and the overall smartening of the distribution grid.

Panel: Towards a pan-European approach to data handling

data flow and accessibility are largely perceived as key enablers to support the energy transition and new business opportunities in Europe. Still, several are the barriers towards a pan European approach that could prevent the emergence of new competitive services. H2020 projects have progressed towards innovative approaches to Data Management and cooperated in the framework of the BRIDGE initiative to boost the removal of existing barriers.

RESERVE: enabling a transition to up to 100% RES

Introducing even higher levels of RES generation is challenging the stability of power networks.  New techniques are needed to regulate frequency and voltage in this context.  Both concept development, simulations with hardware in the loop and field trials are needed to validate the techniques as the basis for proposing new and modified network codes and ancillary service definitions.  These challenges are being addressed by the Horizon2020 project RESERVE and initial project results will be presented.

The INTENSYS4EU (INTegrated ENergy SYStem, a pathway for EUrope) project is a coordination and support Action group supported by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 programme. The overarching goals of the INTENSYS4EU project are two-fold: To support the further integration of innovative solutions in view of hosting 45% of variable renewables by 2030 while operating the energy system in a safe, stable and secure way; and to extend the existing Research and Innovation roadmaps through permanent and direct interactions with the impacted energy system stakeholders and all the Member States in view of validating the portfolio of innovative solutions via appropriate funding mechanisms.

GOFLEX - Business Models demonstrated in a cellular energy system based on 100% renewables

GOFLEX supports the cellular bottom-up approach: On the first level, each prosumer and each microgrid tries to achieve a balance between generation and consumption. On the next level local energy retailers act as virtual power plant operators who try to achieve a balance between local generation and consumption. The TSO in this model has rather the role of an insurance, if the mechanism fails.  The key question is, apart from how to get enough local generation capacity, how can such a system collect enough flexibility to be stable and how can the local DSO benefit from it.

UPGRID, proven solutions for operating present and future LV networks. Evaluation and opportunities

Real proven solutions to enable active demand and distributed generation flexible integration, through a fully controllable LOW Voltage (LV) and medium voltage distribution grid] project is developing and validating solutions to enable the implementation of advanced functionalities over existing technology, to form a truly integrated intelligent system to be ready for operating the grid of the future. With this project an improvement in the monitoring and controllability of LOW Voltage and medium voltage grids is expected, in order to handle the technical challenges associated with the integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DER), as end-users get closer to the energy system (e.g. increase consumer participation in the market). To achieve all this UPGRID relies on four big demonstrators which are in operation now and reporting useful information. UPGRID is a HORIZON 2020 EC funded project.

Elsa: Energy Storage based on 2nd Life Batteries - 6 Pilots in 4 EU-Countries

The presentation will focus first on how the project Energy Local Storage Advanced system (ELSA) brings distributed storage solutions to maturity. The project’s objective is to enable their integration into the energy system and their commercial use. ELSA addresses existing development needs by combining 2nd life batteries with an innovative local ICT-based Energy Management System in order to provide a low-cost, scalable and easy-to-deploy battery energy storage system. Decentralised small- and medium-size energy storage systems provide much greater operating flexibility than today’s energy systems. They ensure a reliable energy supply for buildings and districts and thus enable the integration of a high share of intermittent renewable energy sources.
