The new technologies used in the Smart Grids combine the electrical requirements, communication specifications and Big Data analysis. To ensure the correct operation of the system is not enough to add the partial certifications of each of the elements that make up the system.The experiences with leading utilities demonstrate that the certification process must cover the legal requirements but also must ensure the interoperability of the equipment, the correct dimensioning of the communication channels and the correct management of the obtained data. These points were not necessary in the past but they are essential today.

Vattenfall, one of Europe's largest energy companies, has been leading a smart grid research project known as Smart Grid Gotland in Sweden to demonstrate and prove emerging smart grid technologies.  Vattenfall will provide an update on the Smart Grid Gotland project including the security strategy and benefits achieved from implementing smart grid applications and optimization technology.

The global change of perspective due to the economies’ digital transformation makes a huge impact on the way utilities should approach their businesses today. In a connected world where all collected data from intelligent grids and devices may be utilized and transformed into a meaningful information and knowledge, more than ever it is crucial for the Utilities to provide the right tools and models for operation and monitoring.
