Beyond Pilot Tests: the Next Step in ESS Aggregation
Until now, no one seems to have been able to scale a business model for the aggregation of distributed energy sources that can benefit both prosumers and the electricity system. Elemize Technologies, a young Italian startup, is trying to do so, with a system that connects prosumers with electricity markets. The presentation will give the point of view of a startup operating in this sector, while also showing how energy market rules significantly affect the scalability of ESS aggregation.

Results from Terna’s Experimentation on Grid-Scale Battery Storage Projects
In this presentation, Terna will showcase the results of the first two years of experimentation on its storage pilot plants connected to the NTG. In particular, the presentation will analyze and evaluate the performance of the different battery technologies and their capacity in providing ancillary services by showing some operating cases-of-study. The results of the experiment conducted by Terna will make it possible to identify the potential and margins for improvement in battery storage technologies, encouraging the development of innovative systems and solutions and optimising the use of each technology for existing ancillary services, maximizing the operational benefits.

Building Energy Communities, the Real Promise of Distributed Energy
The presentation will offer deeper understanding of decentralization, its deep connection to digital, the value it is creating, and how it will be enabled or blocked by a number of business, technological and regulatory evolution in years to come. In this presentation, we will try to shed light on some of the above by answering one simple question: is there actual value in optimizing locally, ie in energy communities, from the point of view of the global power system and from that of the end-user ? We will present results obtained from modelling the future (2030) power system, which provide us with a clear positive answer – given some enabling conditions. We will then discuss the path to that future grid vision, and discuss some ideas on how to start enabling the true value of decentralization in 2017.

Hybrid Systems, Exploiting the Competitive Advantage of New Storage Technologies to Provide Tomorrow’s Grid Services
In this presentation EASE will provide an overview of innovative solutions to some of the problems identified by the UK system operator, using new long and short duration storage technologies.
Being an island, the UK is likely to face renewable integration challenges earlier than other countries in Europe. National Grid identified needs for black start, dynamic VAR and solutions to tackle lower levels of inertia. A hybrid system comprised of flywheels, supercapacitors and liquid air energy storage can address specific services optimising utilisation of each technology and maximizing the value delivered to the grid.

Stationery Energy Storage System Using Second Life EV Batteries
Electric Vehicle (EV) battery systems are no longer suitable for vehicle application after the amount of energy that is able to be stored has degraded to approximately 80% SOC or the capable of only storing 80% of the energy of a new battery. This used battery can have significant number of charge/discharge cycles remaining, prior to the battery requiring fundamental recycling. A multi-partner project sponsored by the Clean Energy Fund of Canada (CEF) investigated methodology for extending the useful life, and thereby providing a 2nd life to used EV battery systems into a stationery energy storage system that could be implemented for grid stability and reliability. This project successfully demonstrated a 2nd life energy storage.

CrowdNett: the First Dutch Virtual Power Plant of Aggregated Home Batteries
Eneco introduced in 2016 as one of the first European reseller the Tesla Powerwall. But already started to develop services based on this, and other home batteries. In 2016 we introduced ‘CrowdNett’, a sharing concept. We use partly the capacity of the home batteries and use it, aggregated, for ancillary services (PCR for TSO). As a result we can offer the customer a discount on their installation and a yearly gratification which makes the CrowdNett formule a very compelling offer. In the integration, we work closely together with development teams of Tesla, SolarEdge and Ampard. CrowdNett is now starting to enter other region’s like Germany with utility partner LichtBlick.
In the presentation we focus on the integration, the balancing market, the customer concept and future developments.

HT-TES: High Temperature Thermal Energy Storage
Storage of electricity as high temperature heat in rocks has potential to be a feasible and scalable solution for integration of wind and solar. Furthermore it could utilize existing thermal power plants otherwise threatened to shut down. Energinet is currently researching this potential in cooperation with Danish utility company Seas-NVE, DTU and other partners including the construction of a pilot plant. The presentation will focus on the potential socio-economic and private economic value of the storage technology as well as integration in the energy system.
