Effect of Support Policies and Geographic Distribution of Photovoltaic Self-Consumption on Energy Losses

Photovoltaic (PV) self-consumption concept has emerged as a sustainable and economically viable alternative to save electricity provided by electric utilities. This methodology has been applied to three large scale distribution networks in Spain (Murcia, Madrid and Bizkaia). Results show that there is a significant influence of geographic concentration/dispersion of PV self-consumption systems on energy losses.

USEF’s Aggregator Workstream

After releasing the Universal Smart Energy Framework, USEF started an international cross-functional workstream on aggregator implementation models. The publication was based on our analysis of aggregator implementation models for Demand Response for Commercial and Industrial Prosumers, and has received wide acclaim. USEF’s Aggregator Workstream will present final results, highlighting the relevant differences between the Commerce & Industrial Prosumer and the Residential Prosumer. Aspects of this customer segment differ from C&I Prosumers in terms of the amount of flexibility per asset and thus in the number of Prosumers needed to reach minimum flex product sizes. Also, the type of flexibility is mainly load-shift (EV, heat pump) with low marginal costs of activation. And last but not least: the residential market is more regulated. The consequences for effective market entry for aggregators will be the topic for this HUB session.

Decentralized Governance of Energy Systems: Opportunities and Challenges

The transition towards a more decarbonized energy system has led to contentious debate, not only concerning the mix of energy sources to be drawn upon in the future, but also about the configuration of the system itself, with increasing advocacy for a smaller scale, decentralized energy system. My talk will present the economic arguments in favor and against decentralization of governance of energy systems and will show how the concept of “polycentric governance system” can bring novel perspectives into this debate.

Enabling the ability to respond to context in real-time, fuelled by a diversity of data

With the ever growing data intensity and data diversity, the Smart Grid requires a rethink of the structure and operational suppleness of its infrastructure and its systems. Instead of collecting data to make long-range plans looking backward. Create a system that is active, dynamic, and secure, with the ability to intelligently react to the distributed resources of micro-grids and two-way power flows using context in real time. We don’t need more data but the right data at the right time.

Generating highly accurate solar installed capacity & location data using satellite imagery

Accurate data on the installed capacity and location of distributed energy is essential for utility companies to operate and innovate in the changing energy landscape. But data that meets ideal requirements for accuracy and granularity is often difficult to accumulate or inaccessible due to the drawbacks in incumbent data collection methods. Sobolt found the answer to the drawbacks in current data collection methods through the technological revolutions in satellite imagery and artificial intelligence. Using high-resolution satellite imagery and a unique imagery analysis framework that combines spectral imaging, machine learning algorithms and statistical methods, Sobolt developed a scalable solution to provide accurate data on the location and capacity of existing solar PV installations.

The consumer as key resource to bridge the gap between renewables and system stability

Customers are shaping the energy system of the future by transforming into prosumers through the increase of the number of decentralized energy resources. These customers have a new focus and different needs. They impact the grid stability and our future energy supply that should be intelligently managed to integrate them efficiently in to the energy system. To allow this, utilities and device manufacturers have to meet new types of customer needs, finance the development and continuous management: new business models have to be created where all stakeholders can benefit.

Beyond Bankrupt Bankables

This presentation focuses on the current state of the solar PV industry and how the current value chain exposes the rooftop solar PV segment to unacceptable financial risks. As it becomes more and more clear that terms like “tier 1” and “bankability” are not providing the level of reliability and certainty investors expect and that a brand is only bankable until it is bankrupt where do you go next? The answer is a back to basics approach with a clear focus on accountability and energy production. My presentation will detail how the PV industry and value chain need to change in order to meet the demand of the residential and commercial rooftop segment and offer the financial security they deserve.

InterFlex : European energy players join their forces to foster the energy transition

In a fast-paced and competitive world, modernization is a priority that requires Energy actors to explore new concepts. In particular, DSOs must find ways to optimize electric power systems while integrating increasing shares of renewables (more than 50% by 2030) in a stable and secure way.The InterFlex project, as a response to the Low Carbon Energy LCE-02-2016 call, investigates the interactions between flexibilities provided by energy market players and the distribution grid. Interflex has brought together 20 partners across the European Union (5 DSOs, equipment manufacturers, research institutes) to explore flexibility solutions such as Demand Response, cross energy services, energy storage and the overall smartening of the distribution grid.

RESERVE: enabling a transition to up to 100% RES

Introducing even higher levels of RES generation is challenging the stability of power networks.  New techniques are needed to regulate frequency and voltage in this context.  Both concept development, simulations with hardware in the loop and field trials are needed to validate the techniques as the basis for proposing new and modified network codes and ancillary service definitions.  These challenges are being addressed by the Horizon2020 project RESERVE and initial project results will be presented.

GOFLEX - Business Models demonstrated in a cellular energy system based on 100% renewables

GOFLEX supports the cellular bottom-up approach: On the first level, each prosumer and each microgrid tries to achieve a balance between generation and consumption. On the next level local energy retailers act as virtual power plant operators who try to achieve a balance between local generation and consumption. The TSO in this model has rather the role of an insurance, if the mechanism fails.  The key question is, apart from how to get enough local generation capacity, how can such a system collect enough flexibility to be stable and how can the local DSO benefit from it.

The presentation will focus first on how the project Energy Local Storage Advanced system (ELSA) brings distributed storage solutions to maturity. The project’s objective is to enable their integration into the energy system and their commercial use. ELSA addresses existing development needs by combining 2nd life batteries with an innovative local ICT-based Energy Management System in order to provide a low-cost, scalable and easy-to-deploy battery energy storage system. Decentralised small- and medium-size energy storage systems provide much greater operating flexibility than today’s energy systems. They ensure a reliable energy supply for buildings and districts and thus enable the integration of a high share of intermittent renewable energy sources.

AI and Machine Learning are driving change in the Utility industry

The use of intelligent edge devices to acquire asset sensory data, along with machine learning algorithms to predict when an asset will fail, is becoming more attractive to maintenance managers as they seek new methods to get maintenance costs under control. The use of this technology can augment or even supplement human subject matter experts while providing significant advanced notice of asset health issues by analyzing and learning from past asset health data. In this presentation, we will discuss practical ways in which utilities can get started today and see how others are implementing this technology. - Speaker to be announced

Large scale roll-out and usage of a sensor network at Enexis

Getting state of the art networks means an investment in digitalisation of the grid. Enexis started the digitalisation with distribution automation (DA)in 2011 and followed with the roll-out of the smart meter in the years after. In 2017 a roll-out  of Da-light is started together with the development of an IT architecture and a data science community. Digitalisation helps with the challenges we face due to the energy transition and the more complex energy system we face. The data that is generated is already used in several use cases as will internally as externally and is generating value from the moment that the first components where live.

Business Driven Grid Analytics Capability Deployment

Utility analytics has exploded in the last few years primarily driven by the hype around big data, data science and advanced analytics technologies, and is now seen as a strategic lever to improve assets, operations and customer satisfaction. Despite this drive many utilities are still struggling to implement analytics, either not knowing where to start, not knowing how to scale from pilot developments or attempting technology/vendor driven approaches. This presentation makes the argument for a business led and driven analytics capability deployment approach, enabled by advanced technologies and data science, based on experience from successful projects in the US and Sweden.

In this presentation, we will try to shed light on some of the above by answering one simple question: is there actual value in optimizing locally, ie in energy communities, from the point of view of the global power system and from that of the end-user ? We will present results obtained from modelling the future (2030) power system,  which provide us with a clear positive answer – given some enabling conditions. We will then discuss the path to that future grid vision, and discuss some ideas on how to start enabling the true value of decentralization in 2017.

Hybrid Systems, Exploiting the Competitive Advantage of New Storage Technologies to Provide Tomorrow’s Grid Services

In this presentation EASE will provide an overview of innovative solutions to some of the problems identified by the UK system operator, using new long and short duration storage technologies.

Being an island, the UK is likely to face renewable integration challenges earlier than other countries in Europe. National Grid identified needs for black start, dynamic VAR and solutions to tackle lower levels of inertia. A hybrid system comprised of flywheels, supercapacitors and liquid air energy storage can address specific services optimising utilisation of each technology and maximizing the value delivered to the grid.

Stationery Energy Storage System Using Second Life EV Batteries

Electric Vehicle (EV) battery systems are no longer suitable for vehicle application after the amount of energy that is able to be stored has degraded to approximately 80% SOC or the capable of only storing 80% of the energy of a new battery. This used battery can have significant number of charge/discharge cycles remaining, prior to the battery requiring fundamental recycling. A multi-partner project sponsored by the Clean Energy Fund of Canada (CEF) investigated methodology for extending the useful life, and thereby providing a 2nd life to used EV battery systems into a stationery energy storage system that could be implemented for grid stability and reliability. This project successfully demonstrated a 2nd life energy storage.

CrowdNett: the First Dutch Virtual Power Plant of Aggregated Home Batteries

Eneco introduced in 2016 as one of the first European reseller the Tesla Powerwall. But already started to develop services based on this, and other home batteries. In 2016 we introduced ‘CrowdNett’, a sharing concept. We use partly the capacity of the home batteries and use it, aggregated, for ancillary services (PCR for TSO). As a result we can offer the customer a discount on their installation and a yearly gratification which makes the CrowdNett formule a very compelling offer. In the integration, we work closely together with development teams of Tesla, SolarEdge and Ampard. CrowdNett is now starting to enter other region’s like Germany with utility partner LichtBlick.

In the presentation we focus on the integration, the balancing market, the customer concept and future developments.

Lessons from Pay TV: Survival in a Pool of Sharks

Many challenges in the Smart Grid world are challenges that companies in the Digital Television world have faced in the past 30 years. Security companies in the DTV landscape have learned on the job to fight against organized crime. They have learned how to maintain complex systems with different network topologies and many different types of devices, and how to securely manage those devices. Our Smart Grid does not have 30 years of time to learn on the job. We need to learn from mistakes and experiences made. In this presentation, we give an overview of the main challenges and how these can be addressed this though key management design and device lifecycle security, and we link them to current issues in Smart Grid security.

Learnings from the implementation of an Information Security Management System (ISMS)

The protection of a power system has different priorities compared to traditional IT environments. In IT, the highest priority is always on confidentiality. In operational technologies, availability is more relevant. A system must be available and system operation must be able to protect systems and humans from harm at any cost. With the merging of operational technology and information technology, power systems are facing increased risks from known and new threats.

Experiences of certification processes to ensure integration of Smart Grids

The new technologies used in the Smart Grids combine the electrical requirements, communication specifications and Big Data analysis. To ensure the correct operation of the system is not enough to add the partial certifications of each of the elements that make up the system. The experiences with leading utilities demonstrate that the certification process must cover the legal requirements but also must ensure the interoperability of the equipment, the correct dimensioning of the communication channels and the correct management of the obtained data. These points were not necessary in the past but they are essential today.

Being security-ready has never been more critical

The cybersecurity balance is lost. At the one hand side, state-sponsored hackers finding each day new ways to attack our automation and information systems. On the other side, utilities having limited budgets and limited focus to cybersecurity while digitalization and interfaces between operational and informational systems are growing rapidly. It is required to radically change our operational cybersecurity approach to be able to secure and defend the critical (automation) infrastructure. Protection is not enough!

Northern Power Grid (NPG) finds itself responsible for managing and protecting vast quantities of sensitive data, working with the DCC, a UK company established with the mandate to provide communication services between smart meters and the business systems of energy suppliers, network operators and other authorized service users. In addition to deploying a security-based solution acting as a gateway to the DCC, NPG has been assessing the security implications of their smart metering activity and considering the organizational, process and technology changes required in order to manage risk and be prepared for breaches. NPG will talk about the benefits of a security audit : oftentimes uncomfortable and hard-work, but an outward-in view on how to best defend data with a view to protecting customers and assuring supply.

How DSO can Support Demand Response as part of the Flexible Energy Markets

Energy production has shifted heavily from centralised to decentralised. As part of the energy transition, most of the disruption will happen in distribution network and DSOs has to change the way they manage the distribution network. In the traditional world the electricity was delivered through a passive network but when the electricity is generated more locally, it challenges DSOs and other market participants to develop dynamic network management tools including both market products and technical solutions. The key is to collaborate and find the ways to activate customers to balance the weather-related production when required. This challenges the energy sector to put customers in focus and solve the challenge without affecting too much for daily living. One solution is to utilise smart meters as part of the demand response, which could be used to open the demand response market and attract customers be active players also in the energy market.
