USEF’s Aggregator Workstream
After releasing the Universal Smart Energy Framework, USEF started an international cross-functional workstream on aggregator implementation models. The publication was based on our analysis of aggregator implementation models for Demand Response for Commercial and Industrial Prosumers, and has received wide acclaim. USEF’s Aggregator Workstream will present final results, highlighting the relevant differences between the Commerce & Industrial Prosumer and the Residential Prosumer. Aspects of this customer segment differ from C&I Prosumers in terms of the amount of flexibility per asset and thus in the number of Prosumers needed to reach minimum flex product sizes. Also, the type of flexibility is mainly load-shift (EV, heat pump) with low marginal costs of activation. And last but not least: the residential market is more regulated. The consequences for effective market entry for aggregators will be the topic for this HUB session.

Enabling the ability to respond to context in real-time, fuelled by a diversity of data
With the ever growing data intensity and data diversity, the Smart Grid requires a rethink of the structure and operational suppleness of its infrastructure and its systems. Instead of collecting data to make long-range plans looking backward. Create a system that is active, dynamic, and secure, with the ability to intelligently react to the distributed resources of micro-grids and two-way power flows using context in real time. We don’t need more data but the right data at the right time.

Generating highly accurate solar installed capacity & location data using satellite imagery
Accurate data on the installed capacity and location of distributed energy is essential for utility companies to operate and innovate in the changing energy landscape. But data that meets ideal requirements for accuracy and granularity is often difficult to accumulate or inaccessible due to the drawbacks in incumbent data collection methods. Sobolt found the answer to the drawbacks in current data collection methods through the technological revolutions in satellite imagery and artificial intelligence. Using high-resolution satellite imagery and a unique imagery analysis framework that combines spectral imaging, machine learning algorithms and statistical methods, Sobolt developed a scalable solution to provide accurate data on the location and capacity of existing solar PV installations.

GOFLEX - Business Models demonstrated in a cellular energy system based on 100% renewables
GOFLEX supports the cellular bottom-up approach: On the first level, each prosumer and each microgrid tries to achieve a balance between generation and consumption. On the next level local energy retailers act as virtual power plant operators who try to achieve a balance between local generation and consumption. The TSO in this model has rather the role of an insurance, if the mechanism fails. The key question is, apart from how to get enough local generation capacity, how can such a system collect enough flexibility to be stable and how can the local DSO benefit from it.

Building Energy Communities, the Real Promise of Distributed Energy
The presentation will offer deeper understanding of decentralization, its deep connection to digital, the value it is creating, and how it will be enabled or blocked by a number of business, technological and regulatory evolution in years to come. In this presentation, we will try to shed light on some of the above by answering one simple question: is there actual value in optimizing locally, ie in energy communities, from the point of view of the global power system and from that of the end-user ? We will present results obtained from modelling the future (2030) power system, which provide us with a clear positive answer – given some enabling conditions. We will then discuss the path to that future grid vision, and discuss some ideas on how to start enabling the true value of decentralization in 2017.

Stationery Energy Storage System Using Second Life EV Batteries
Electric Vehicle (EV) battery systems are no longer suitable for vehicle application after the amount of energy that is able to be stored has degraded to approximately 80% SOC or the capable of only storing 80% of the energy of a new battery. This used battery can have significant number of charge/discharge cycles remaining, prior to the battery requiring fundamental recycling. A multi-partner project sponsored by the Clean Energy Fund of Canada (CEF) investigated methodology for extending the useful life, and thereby providing a 2nd life to used EV battery systems into a stationery energy storage system that could be implemented for grid stability and reliability. This project successfully demonstrated a 2nd life energy storage.

How DSO can Support Demand Response as part of the Flexible Energy Markets
Energy production has shifted heavily from centralised to decentralised. As part of the energy transition, most of the disruption will happen in distribution network and DSOs has to change the way they manage the distribution network. In the traditional world the electricity was delivered through a passive network but when the electricity is generated more locally, it challenges DSOs and other market participants to develop dynamic network management tools including both market products and technical solutions. The key is to collaborate and find the ways to activate customers to balance the weather-related production when required. This challenges the energy sector to put customers in focus and solve the challenge without affecting too much for daily living. One solution is to utilise smart meters as part of the demand response, which could be used to open the demand response market and attract customers be active players also in the energy market.
